At KM 213, at Relais-Gabrielle we took a break for lunch. This is one of two gas stations .. and bathrooms... between Baie Comeau and Labrador City. Shortly after, the paved road turned to gravel/dirt. The dirt was well packed and quite smooth for most of the way. Where it had rained, it was a little slippery, but not bad at all. And the advantage was that it was wider than the paved road.
The road itself was had lots of twists and turns as well as steep hills. It was almost impossible to go any faster than about 50 or 60. The countryside was absolutely beautiful and the traffic was very light. In fact, we were often alone on the highway.
At KM 320, the pavement returned for about 100 km and then returned to dirt/gravel for another 60km, then back to pavement for the last little bit.
At one point, I noticed a sign for the Ancient Village of Gagnon. All we noticed along the side of the gravel road we were on was about 4 km of paved sidwalks to nowhere. Fascinating
On our travels we noted a number of hydo electric plants and power lines. As well, just outside of Fermont, we saw an iron mine. It was fascinating to see the pond next to the mine - the water was actually pink.
We changed time zones at the Labrador border. Our car GPS seems to think we are on Newfoundland time, so it half an hour ahead of the actual time.
We arrived in Labrador City around 6pm local time and found a motel for the night. Our room is a suite with a separate bedroom and living area and an efficiency kitchen.
After checking in we took a tour of the community and then had supper at Pizza restaurant next door to the motel.
Bob is doing laundry while I write the blog and post the photos. Not sure how well posting is going to work and the internet is very reliable right now - it keeps dropping and coming back. We will see!
Tomorrow we head up the Labrador highway.
