July 28 (Day 14) Oshawa to Kanata (near Ottawa)

We are officially on Holiday. We checked out around 930am.  First we had to stop at the shoe store to pick up the sandel Bob had left the day before to be repaired.  I couldn't believe how huge the mall was.  It seemed to go on forever!

After picking up Bob's sandel, we headed towards Ottawa via #7.  We even got to drive for a bit on the #401!  The clouds in the distance were ominous and were threatening rain.  We stopped in Peterborough for breakfast at the A&W.  We also visited the Canoe Museum in Peterborough.  It was a fascinating place.  They had dougout canoes that went back hundreds and hundreds of years all the way up to racing canoes used in modern day racing.  The museum described the history of the development of canoes and their importance in first nations communities.  They also described first contact and how indigenous and settlers interacting.

After visiting the museum, we headed off towards Ottawa.  Not far along the road, we turned off towards curve lake to visit the petroglyphs.  The petroglyphs are on Nishnabeg land (Treaty 20 territory).  The display walked us through many of the teachings of the Ojibway and the history of the petroglyphs.  They were fascinating!  The petroglyphs are housed in an atmosphere controlled building to protect them from future decay.  Because this was a sacred space for the indigenous people of this area, we were asked to respect the space and not take pictures.  As a result, you won't see any photos of the area.  Just suffice it to say, they were very interesting.

In Mamover, the Tim Hortons had blueberry fritters.  Why not in Saskatoon?

It rained off and on throughout the day.  When the rain came, it came in deluges for a short time, and then cleared only to return again.  We were blessed to see a rainbow between the deluges.

We arrived in Kanata and around 8pm and settled in for the evening, after a very interesting day.
